Diploma in Energy Systems and Management
(DESM) S45
School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)

The Diploma in Energy Systems and Management (DESM) provides you with a wide spectrum of knowledge and technical skills in energy systems and management. There is a strong focus on managing the common types of energy systems found in the industry - solar, oil and gas. You will also be equipped with solid technical knowledge and good practical skills in three important areas: electrical power system, clean energy and energy efficiency & management.

What makes DESM unique?

  • The course is recognised by the Energy Market Authority(EMA) and graduates are eligible to apply for a “Professional Electrical License” which will boost their standing and qualifications in the industry.
  • Work and learn using various on-campus energy systems (solar and wind) that SP is researching with governmental agencies and industry partners.
  • Overseas industrial training programmes in Australia, Germany, Thailand, China and Japan.
  • DESM is the most established energy-related diploma in Singapore and SP has been working closely with the government on test-bedding green energy systems such as solar & wind in Singapore.
  • You can get direct entry to year 2 of NTU’s Electrical & Electronic Engineering course or a one year exemption of relevant modules from NUS’ Electrical Engineering course. Exemptions with other local and foreign universities are available too.

Applicants must obtain:

i) the following GCE 'O' Level grades at not more than two sittings and

ii) 26 points or better for the net ELR2B2 aggregate score (i.e. English Language, 2 relevant subjects and best 2 other subjects, including CCA Bonus points)

Aggregate Type: ELR2B2-C
Subject Grade

a) English Language

1 - 7

b) Mathematics (Elementary/Additional)

1 - 6

c) One of the following 3rd relevant subjects:

1 - 6

To be eligible for admission, you must also have sat for one of the following subjects:

  • Biology
  • Biotechnology
  • Chemistry
  • Combined Science
  • Design & Technology
  • Fundamentals of Electronics
  • Physical Science
  • Physics
  • Science (Chemistry, Biology)
  • Science (Physics, Biology)
  • Science (Physics, Chemistry)

It should be noted that applicants, particularly those who wish to pursue a career in electrical power engineering or as a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW), with colour vision deficiency may encounter difficulties meeting the course requirements and expectation, as this condition is required by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore. Those with mild colour deficiency are required to undergo an in-house test.

According to the Energy Market Authority, Singapore will need 11,000 energy management professionals across various sectors to maintain its economic growth over the next 10 years. Jobs in the energy sectors or power and utilities companies will thus be abundant for DESM graduates. You can also become a researcher on clean or efficient energy systems. Some career options for DESM graduates include:

  • Power System Designer
  • Energy System Auditor
  • Power Distribution Engineer

Further Studies

As a DESM graduate, you may be offered advanced standing from both local and overseas universities. They include:

  • Nanyang Technological University
  • National University of Singapore
  • Singapore University of Technology and Design
  • Singapore Institute of Technology
  • Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Switzerland
  • Munich University of Applied Sciences, Germany
  • University of Manchester, UK

You can also apply for non-engineering degree courses.
